Admissions Requirements Holistic Admissions Admissions FAQ

While a strong GPA, solid science foundation, and competitive DAT score are important factors in admission, our review process extends beyond grades and test results.

Our holistic admissions approach evaluates each applicant as a unique individual, considering not only academic achievement but also personal experiences, attributes, and potential contributions to the School of Dental Medicine. We value the diversity that enriches our learning environment and enhances the care we provide to patients. A diverse student body also helps address health disparities and strengthens the dental profession as a whole.

Factors considered in an applicant’s file include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Academic performance with emphasis on high level science courses
  • Critical thinking, problem-solving ability, and research experience
  • Demonstrated compassion and service to others
  • Obtaining a realistic preview of the dental profession
  • Interpersonal and communication skills
  • Leadership skills
  • Life experiences
  • Community service
  • Personal attributes

Additional factors considered, but not limited to, are:

  • Geographic diversity, especially in communities who experience a dental personnel shortage and/or are designated a countywide Dental Professional Shortage Area.
  • Unique work or service activities, especially when demonstrated how these experiences have led to improved outcomes.
  • Personal leadership associated with making an impact or change.
  • Self-reported disadvantaged status, especially when associated academic, professional, or personal barrier/challenges have been successfully surmounted.

Admissions Integrity

The University at Buffalo School of Dental Medicine (UBSDM) admission process provides a holistic evaluation of applicants' academic records and experiences. UBSDM expects and assumes all applicants will adhere to the highest standards of integrity by fully and accurately providing all information and documentation required for a comprehensive review. The UBSDM reserves the right to revoke admission, reverse a decision, or re-evaluate admission should falsified information from the applicant be submitted. Falsified application information may include but is not limited to: making inaccurate or plagiarized statements on the application, withholding information requested on the application, omitting transcripts for prior college-level work, giving false information, submitting fraudulent or falsified documents in support of a dental admissions application, or using artificial intelligence in an unauthorized way.

The UBSDM Office of Admissions will determine if an admission decision should stand or be withdrawn when violations of admissions integrity are identified prior to matriculation (before the first day of the academic term for which the student was admitted).

After UBSDM matriculation (on or after the first day of the academic term for which the student was admitted), suspected violations of admissions integrity are overseen by the UBSDM Judicial Council Policies and Procedures as per appendix G, section II, Formal Proceedings, of the UBSDM Student Handbook.
