IDP Program Overview

  • The International Dentist Program (IDP) is for the internationally trained dentist who seeks to practice dentistry in the United States. 
  • The IDP program is two years in duration, beginning in May, with an intensive preparatory summer course, followed by the third and fourth years of our Doctor of Dental Surgery (DDS) program.  
  • Graduates receive a DDS degree and are eligible to participate in the various licensure examinations . 

Summer Program

  • UB Dental offers IDP Students an eleven-week summer program. 
  • During this condensed summer program, the following topics taught in the first two years of the DDS Program will be covered: 
  • Dentures
  • Restoration
  • Endodontics
  • Implantology
  • Periodontics 
  • Pediatrics
  • Impressions
  • Anesthesia and Medical Emergencies

Third Year Details

  • In the third year, study of most clinical subjects continues, with courses in oral pathology and radiology, pharmacology, oral medicine, and anesthesia. 
  • Lecture courses lessen in quantity, and the clinical practice of dentistry begins to take precedence in time and effort. 
  • Third-year students spend three full days (9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.) in the clinic each week, with the remaining two days spent in classes and labs.

Fourth Year Details

  • The fourth-year selective program allows students to pursue their career interests in dentistry or to begin to focus on a specialty area that may or may not be pursued after graduation. 
  • Fourth-year students select courses from a wide range of clinical, basic, and behavioral sciences, based on their individual interests. 
  • Students enroll in a minimum of 2 credit hours or two courses of selectives in the fall and spring semesters.
Accreditation

The predoctoral dental education program (DDS) is accredited by the Commission on Dental Accreditation and has been granted the accreditation status of accredited without reporting requirements. The Commission is a specialized accrediting body recognized by the United States Department of Education.
