Oral Biology PhD

Many of our graduates pursue jobs in research in academia, government and in industry. Our alumni have careers in a wide range of areas, including business and commercial development, academic and research administration, policy and legal affairs, medical testing, science education and outreach and science communication and publishing.

Interdisciplinary in nature, the program draws on faculty expertise across broad research areas, including biochemistry, biophysics, developmental biology, immunology, microbiology, cell and molecular biology, physiology, and pharmacology. Students choose an area of concentration from these disciplines, but may also combine work in several fields to support their research interests. 

While the program centers on oral health research, students benefit from the emphasis on collaboration among UB's schools, centers, and external research institutions.

Our department has a long and productive history of training researchers who achieve fellowships, win major grants and advance innovation in the field. Students gain critical research experience as young scientists, supported by a robust network of support for their training. This includes conducting research with renowned faculty, presenting at conferences and more. Whether conducting groundbreaking experiments, analyzing complex data, or developing innovative theories, students have the resources and mentorship they need to succeed.

Here, you’ll work alongside some of the most respected researchers in the field. Many of our faculty have national roles as editors of journals and presidents of renowned dental societies. At UB, you’ll also find a number of new, younger faculty members who offer fresh insights and perspectives.

Upon entering the program, our PhD students join a dynamic community of scholars. Our department is home to students, postdocs, faculty, and staff from around the world, each of whom brings a unique perspective and contributions to the department. PhD students benefit from intergroup mentorship, meetings and support within their cohort.
