Oral Biology was the first department of its kind in a U.S. dental school, the first to offer a PhD in oral biology, and is a leader in oral health research.

Department History

The UB School of Dental Medicine established the first department of oral biology in the country. The department was formed in 1962, making it the oldest in the country. Our reputation is built upon a legacy of excellence created by world-renowned faculty, researchers and students, and our many notable alumni.

Today, the department is a leader in oral biology research and innovation, providing state-of-the-art research training in scientific methodology and theory. Our focus is on the creation, dissemination and application of knowledge in oral and craniofacial health science. We prepare students to become part of leading oral health research facilities and institutions.

Research remains a core focus area of our department, supporting the school's mission and the university's Top 25 ambition. Our faculty, research scientists, clinical associate/assistant professors, staff and students all uniquely contribute to our department's success, carrying forward its tradition of excellence.

About Dr. Ruhl

Stefan Ruhl, DDS, PhD, is an internationally renowned expert on saliva, bacteria and the oral microbiome. He has been with UB since 2007, and has served the school in various capacities, including as associate chair and acting chair of the department and interim dean of the school. He became department chair in 2024.
