Alternative/Private Loan Application Information

An alternative loan is a private, non-federal loan from an outside source such as a bank or other lending institution.  

You must apply for separate loans to pay for the Summer Program Fee and the following two academic years of the DDS Program.

Self-Certification Form

New federal regulations require all students that apply for an alternative/private loan to complete a Private Education Loan Application Self-Certification form.

Your lender will require this form as part of your application process. The form can be submitted by fax, paper, or electronically depending on your lender.

The form requires you to submit your cost of attendance:

Please submit this form directly to your lender, not to the Dental School, SDM Office of Continuing Education, or the University at Buffalo Financial Aid Office.

Lender Information

Students have the right to select the alternative lender of their choice. 

In order to better serve our students and their families, we have created a listing of reputable lenders that offer flexible loan products and services. 

UB/CDE will try to accept loan certifications for other private education lenders, however, if they are not on the list below, you must contact us prior to applying so we can make special arrangements. 

Please make sure you input the CORRECT SCHOOL CODE OR BRANCH to ensure the funds are not misdirected to the University at Buffalo Office of Financial Aid.

When you apply for a loan: 

  • Select either yellow “apply” button.
  • For your type of program, select "Graduate or Advanced Degree"
  • For your degree, select "DMD or DDS Doctor of Medicine in Dentistry or Doctor of Dental Surgery"

  • Go to the website above or call 1-800-708-6684 to apply instantly over the phone
  • Be sure to indicate “New York” as your state and “SUNY at Buffalo Summer IDP” as your school

SoFi Health Professions Loan

  • Go to the website above to apply
  • Applicants will need a Social Security Number (SSN) or an Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN)
  • Look for the University at Buffalo - International Dental Program in the drop down box
