BEFORE BEGINNING THE PROGRAM
- The new resident is expected to complete the USMLE Part 1 by the program start date.
- Obtain an up-to-date BLS and ACLS certification by Incoming Resident Week (typically the last week of June).
YEAR 1 (PGY-1)
- The first-year resident will primarily work in the Erie County Medical Center and The School of Dental Medicine clinics.
- Supervise and instruct 3rd and 4th-year dental students in the School of Dental Medicine oral surgery clinics.
- Complete IDM 620/621 Clinical Practice of Medicine through the Jacobs School of Medicine.
- Take call at the Erie County Medical Center 3-5 nights per week (first call).
YEAR 2 (OFF-SERVICE, NO PGY LEVEL)
- The second-year resident will join the 3rd year medical school class full time.
- When the second year is complete, the resident is expected to register for the USMLE Part 2 before the completion of medical school.
YEAR 3 (OFF-SERVICE, NO PGY LEVEL / PGY-2 WITH ANESTHESIA ROTATION)
- The third-year resident will continue with their class and graduate medical school with the Doctor of Medicine (MD) in Spring.
- After completing medical school, the resident will go back on-service as a PGY-2 to begin a 5-month Anesthesia Rotation.
YEAR 4 (PGY-2 / THEN PGY-1)
- The GME will register the resident for ATLS certification during the summer (prior to Incoming Resident Week) with the new surgical resident class.
- The fourth-year resident will complete the Anesthesia Rotation as a PGY-2 in early Fall.
- Complete the General Surgery Rotation in the early Fall as a PGY-1 until the end of the 4th year.
YEAR 5 (PGY-3)
- The fifth-year resident will rotate between the Erie County Medical Center and the School of Dental Medicine clinics.
- Supervise and instruct 3rd and 4th year dental students in the School of Dental Medicine oral surgery clinics.
- Register and complete PALS certification.
- Take call at the Erie County Medical Center (50% first call / 50% second call) 3-5 nights per week.
YEAR 6, CHIEF RESIDENT (PGY-4)
- The sixth-year resident will be the Chief Resident and will be integral in the coordination of the lower-level residents, as well as everyday operations of the program
- Rotate between the Erie County Medical Center and the School of Dental Medicine clinics.
- Supervise and instruct 3rd and 4th year dental students in the School of Dental Medicine oral surgery clinics.
- Take call at the Erie County Medical Center 3-5 nights per week (second call).
