STEER Mentor Application

UB SDM invites senior-level faculty to apply to be a STEER mentor. For this program, senior level is defined as all clinical and tenured associate (after 5 years) and full professors, and SUNY distinguished faculty from the University at Buffalo or within the State University of New York system. Faculty outside of the SUNY system are also encouraged to apply.

Benefits to Participating

  1. A stipend to support 20 hours (contact and non-contact) time toward mentoring relationship(s) over the 12-month program duration.
  2. Receive training on best practices in mentoring.
  3. Connect with and learn from other mentors.
  4. Potential involvement with publications and presentations.
  5. Recognition of service.
  6. Impact the next generation of dental researchers/educators.

Faculty Mentor Responsibilities and Expectations

  1. Regularly meet with your mentee (bi-monthly meetings are recommended).
    - Develop a mentorship plan with your mentee. Your plan should guide your mentee toward successful, independent scholarship.
    - Define and review your mentees career goals and Individual Development Plans so that they are consistent with the recommended milestones for the department and school.
    - Conduct an annual review with your mentee and their department chair.
  2. Participate in structured program activities.
    - Participate in two faculty mentor training programs, May 25 from 1-4:30pm and June 15 from 9am-1pm.
    - Deliver one (1) presentation to the Fellows cohort.
  3. Attend at least one seminar at which your mentee is a presenter, introducing the mentee.
  4. Meet with all faculty mentors and the SDM Office of EDI semi-annually to monitor and assess mentorships, mentee progress toward meeting professional goals, plans for the coming year, and to evaluate the mentoring program.
  5. Review and follow best practices for faculty mentors.
