Reflections on the first 18 months as dean

Dean Araujo.

As I reflect on my first 18 months as dean of the School of Dental Medicine, I am filled with gratitude and excitement for the journey we are on together. Returning to UB, a place that has always felt like home, has been both a privilege and an opportunity to build upon our legacy of excellence in research, education and patient care.

My time here began as a graduate student, where I earned my PhD in epidemiology and my master’s degree in oral sciences. Since then, I’ve had the opportunity to explore diverse roles in dentistry, from clinical practice to leadership positions in nonprofit organizations and the pharmaceutical industry. This experience has shaped how I approach my role as your dean. I am committed to using the broad perspectives I've gained to steer the school into the future.

I am proud to share that we have launched a comprehensive strategic plan that will guide our focus over the next five years. This plan is built on four key pillars: people, innovation, education and community. Each pillar addresses the evolving needs of our students, faculty and the communities we serve.

  • People: Our people are our greatest asset. We are focused on providing them with an incusive environment focused on critical communications used to set clear expectations and accountability.
  • Innovation: We will apply disruptive innovation and lead discovery with the highest standards of excellence in research, clinical care and education.
  • Education: We are optimizing the academic experience to provide excellent and inclusive communication.
  • Community: We will continue to foster enduring relationships and ensure high-quality care to serve our diverse communities.

Together, we can create an inclusive and innovative environment that empowers our excellence and celebrates our individual and collective successes. Thank you for your support and collaboration as we make our vision a reality.
