The University at Buffalo School of Dental Medicine celebrated graduating students in the Class of 2026 during its 132nd Commencement on Friday, May 1, held at the Center for the Arts.
Family, friends, faculty and staff gathered to recognize students receiving the Doctor of Dental Surgery (DDS) degree, master’s degrees, advanced certificates and PhDs in oral biology. 174 degrees were conferred, which included DDS, master’s and PhDs in oral biology and advanced certificates in general dentistry, endodontics, oral and maxillofacial pathology, oral and maxillofacial surgery, orthodontics, pediatric dentistry, periodontics, prosthodontics, and temporomandibular disorders and orofacial pain.
The ceremony opened with the academic processional, led by the Educator of the Year, Dr. Patrick Anders, associate dean for advanced education, who carried the school's academic mace. University leadership welcomed graduates and guests, with President Satish K. Tripathi encouraging graduates to cultivate fairness and compassion in their future endeavors.
In remarks to the graduating class, Dean Marcelo Araujo recognized students for their kindness, respect and compassion, emphasizing the importance of these values in the next step of their careers in oral health.
Dr. Lisa A. Tedesco, vice provost emerita, dean emerita and professor emerita at Emory University, was the featured speaker. A former dental school faculty member, Tedesco has focused her academic research on health psychology with concentrations in oral health, health promotion, health disparities and workforce diversity.
At the ceremony’s conclusion, DDS graduates recited the dentist’s pledge in unison, affirming their commitment to ethical practice and the highest standards of patient care.
