The University at Buffalo School of Dental Medicine celebrated 168 graduating students in the Class of 2025 during its 131st Commencement on Friday, May 2.
Family, friends, faculty and staff gathered in the Center for the Arts to recognize students achieving the Doctor of Dental Surgery (DDS) degree, master’s degree, advanced certificate and PhD in oral biology.
Educator of the Year recipient Dr. Nicole Hinchy, Department of Oral Diagnostic Sciences, led the processional bearing the academic mace. President Satish K. Tripathi delivered an inspiring address encouraging students to use the knowledge and training earned at UB to positively impact the world.
In a heartfelt message to the class, Dean Marcelo Araujo reflected on the memories they share and the class’s unique ability to make connections, an attribute that will empower their future success.
Dr. Hinchy, Dr. Joseph DeLuca, Dental Alumni Association president, and Amanda Zeccola, vice president of the Class of 2025, also addressed the graduates, sharing advice and recognizing their extraordinary achievements.
The Commencement address was given by Dr. Kathy O’Loughlin, retired executive director of the American Dental Association, who spoke on the virtues of courage, resilience and optimism.
Several faculty and staff were recognized during the ceremony for excellence and service to the school. Dr. Eugena Stephan, associate dean for clinical affairs (faculty), received the Dean's Award for faculty. Martha Boyer, human resources officer, received the Dean's Award for staff. The Dean's Award recognizes those who have made a positive professional impact on a greater than local or regional level. Dr. Hema Arany, clinical associate professor, received the Richard A. Powell Award, which recognizes an outstanding dental educator. Dr. Meelin Dian Chin Kit-Wells, associate clinical professor, received the Charles S. Lipani Award recognizing her outstanding contributions to the UBSDM.
At the ceremony’s conclusion, DDS graduates recited the dentist’s pledge in unison, embracing their responsibility as dentists and commitment to their patients and standards of oral health care.
