We offer one program with two distinct options, based on the candidate’s dental training:

• Traditional Paid Residency | One Year for candidates with DDS or DMD degrees from the US or Canada. A second year option is available to those interested if selected.
  
• International Scholars Program | Two Year for internationally trained dentists. This program does not offer salary or stipend and students must dual enroll in an Master's program and pay tuition and fees.

While this program is not a fifth year of dental school, its location within the School of Dental Medicine offers several advantages including an excellent faculty/resident ratio and access to all specialties. Two faculty are assigned per clininc session to soley educate and provide support. Our goals are:

• To provide the resident with a broad-based comprehensive clinical experience in general dentistry
  
• To educate each resident in the principles of modern oral healthcare delivery thatprovides a foundation for continued, future learning
  
• To emphasize the comprehensive care of patients
  
• To understand the oral health needs of communities and of the dental professional’s role in community service

The program provides advanced training beyond the level of predoctoral education in clinical dentistry and applied basic and behavioral sciences.  During this program, students can refine the skills necessary for the generalist to provide comprehensive patient care for all population groups.

This is a planned, sequential postdoctoral training program that is specifically designed to meet the needs of graduates who want to enhance their skills as general practitioners.  The program is a supplement to the predoctoral curriculum, but is not a required component of that educational sequence.

Accreditation

The program in advanced education in general dentistry is accredited by the Commission on Dental Accreditation and has been granted the accreditation status of accredited without reporting requirements. The Commission is a specialized accrediting body recognized by the United States Department of Education. Length of Program

Our program is one-year in length beginning on July 1.  Aan optional second year is also offered. The second year expands on the knowledge and experience obtained in the first year and is only available to those currently enrolled in our first year program.  

Support From Hygienists and Assistants

Each resident is assigned one dedicated operatory with added charges available as needed.  Residents work closely with hygienists in the school’s Oral Hygiene Recall program. Assistance from a certified dental assistant for any procedure is available when necessary. Due to the fluctuating number of providers in the clinic at any one time, we do not always have a 1:1 ratio, but we make every effort to assure efficient utilization of support staff.

The School of Dental Medicine established the International Advanced Education Scholar Program with the goal of promoting and improving the level of dentistry at other dental institutions around the world. Through this program, current and future faculty members supported by their institutions (dental schools, teaching hospitals and government institutions) can receive advanced education training along with MS and/or PhD degrees. 

AEGD International Scholars: 

• Do not receive a salary during their program.
• Must concurrently pursue a research program; this is customarily an MS in either Oral Sciences or Biomaterials. Applications to AEGD are considered incomplete until a separate application has been made to one of the master's level research programs.
• Pay all routine tuition and fees applicable to the MS program plus an extra fee to offset the costs of the scholar's training including program coordination, teaching, and research and certification in a clinical program.

One or two international scholars are typically accepted each year.
