Community Outreach

The Univeristy at Buffalo  is to promote dental education and provide free oral health care in those areas of the world that lack adequate access to such treatment. Because a smile is understood in any language, our name signifies our dedication to oral health care, as well as our goal of advocating for universal access for care worldwide.

Various SDM groups collaborate to provide donated dental services locally, nationally and internationally. Each group addresses a unique underserved population. The innovative and truly global nature of their activities serves to alleviate human suffering and improve oral health and quality of life.

SDM students attend outreach events throughout the year. The events take place at the Buffalo Zoo, elementary schools, malls, local churches, health and harvest fairs. At these events students promote oral health awareness and access to care with the intent of spreading oral health awareness.

UB's School of Dental Medicine has served the oral health care needs of Chautauqua County’s children for 15 years with its school-based mobile dental van. Thanks to a federal grant from the Health Resources and Services Administration and gifts from the Lenna Foundation and the Ralph C. Sheldon Foundation, the School has been able to purchase S-Miles To Go, a state-of-the-art mobile dental unit equipped with three dental chairs.

Buffalo Outreach and Community Assistance (BOCA) is an international public health organization that recruits students and dental professionals to promote dental education and implement free dental care in those areas of the world that lack adequate access to care. The word BOCA, which means “mouth” in Spanish, signifies our dedication to oral health care, as well as our goal of advocating for more universal access to dental care worldwide.

The BOCA Auction is the organizations' largest fundraising event of the year! The student organizations's goal is to interact with and help communities in Buffalo and abroad with their dental needs. The money raised from this event helps fund participation in various Remote Area Medical [RAM] and BOCA-International events. For example, supplies required to participate in outreach events come from auction dollars.
