Emergency Care

Dental emergencies happen. We are here to help.

An emergency is when immediate care is necessary. Please note that emergency care is limited to the management of pain, swelling or trauma. Specific dental procedures, such as fillings or extractions, aren’t performed as emergency services. Follow the steps below to make an emergency appointment.

During Regular Clinic Hours (M-F, 9 a.m.-4 p.m.)

Emergency care is offered during regular clinic hours, Monday-Friday, 9 a.m.-4 p.m. (excluding holidays). To schedule an emergency care appointment, choose from the following options:

  • If you have an assigned student dentist, please call them directly or contact the school switchboard at 716-829-2824 and have your assigned student dentist paged.
  • If you do not have an assigned student dentist or your assigned student dentist is not available, ask the dental school switchboard operator to transfer your call to our emergency appointment desk, or call it directly at 716-829-6439 and make an emergency appointment.
  • Orthodontic Patients: Please call 716-829-2845 to schedule a time to come in and have the issue addressed.

After Hours, Weekends and Holidays

Adult Patients

If you are a current patient who needs emergency treatment outside regular clinic hours, please call 1-866-244-9387 and identify yourself as a current patient. The on-call technician will ask for your contact information and information related to your dental emergency. You will then receive a call from the designated on-call dentist.

Pediatric Patients

Parents/guardians with children experiencing a dental emergency outside regular clinic hours should contact the Golisano Children’s Hospital and take the following steps:

  • Call 716-323-2100 and explain that your child has a dental emergency. Ask the operator to page the dental resident.
  • The dental resident will talk to you and determine what emergency treatment procedure is appropriate for your child.

Orthodontic Patients

If you are a patient in the UB orthodontic clinic who needs emergency treatment outside regular clinic hours, please call 1-866-244-9387 and identify yourself as a current orthodontic patient. You will be asked by the on-call technician to provide your contact information and any other information related to your orthodontic emergency. You will then receive a call from the designated on-call dentist.
