New Patients

UB Dental offers a unique experience compared to private dental practices. Due to the individualized attention given to each patient, please be aware that it may take longer to book an appointment, and appointments can last up to three hours. This is because students and faculty closely collaborate on every step of your treatment, providing what is known as "no-rush dental care."

Our students depend on their patients to graduate. Therefore, it is important that our patients keep their appointments, follow their recommended treatment plan and respond to their student/patient manager in a timely fashion. These guidelines ensure patients receive the best possible care, while providing our students with the best possible education.  

We encourage you to read our Patient Information Booklet to learn more about what to expect when you visit UB Dental:

Every new patient (except orthodontics patients) must complete and submit a new patient information packet. You can contact us at 716-262-9750 to request the packet, which we will mail to you, or you can download it. Once complete, mail the packet to our facility. We will then contact you to schedule a new patient screening visit.

If you are an orthodontics patient, you do not need to complete the new patient form. Please call 716-829-2845 to make an appointment.

Once your completed application is received, a registration attendant will contact you to schedule an appointment. Your new patient screening visit will take place at Squire Hall on UB’s South Campus, where our patient care clinic is located.

The purpose of the screening is to determine your dental needs and answer questions about future treatment. During this visit, we will:

• Review your medical and dental history forms.
• Provide a preliminary oral exam and pain assessment.
• Some patients may take panorex X-rays.

All patients are eligible for screening, and nearly every patient is accepted for treatment. However, if alternative treatment options are a better fit for your needs, we can provide you with recommendations. 

This fee covers the cost of establishing a patient record, processing the information, conducting the initial evaluation and obtaining a panoramic radiograph (X-ray), if needed. (If current X-rays of good quality have been received prior to your new patient screening appointment, you may not require the panoramic X-ray.) Payment is accepted in the form of a check or money order payable to “UB School of Dental Medicine.”

Individuals with Medicaid insurance are not required to pay the fee; however, you must provide us with enough information to determine your Medicaid eligibility. Fees are subject to change at any time.

Please note that screening visits are free for orthodontics patients.

At your first appointments, your assigned student dentist will gather further diagnostic information and develop your treatment plan. Your treatment plan contains:

• Detailed information regarding the dental procedures to be performed.
• Estimated treatment cost.
• Estimated treatment time.

Treatment typically begins during your third appointment. Treatment only begins after you, your student/resident and faculty member agree on the right treatment plan for you (including the cost).

• Orthodontic patients do not need to complete the new patient form. Please call 716-829-2845 to schedule a screening appointment.
• Screening visits are free for orthodontics patients.
• After you are accepted as a patient, you will set up a series of appointments to have records taken (X-rays, photos and molds of your teeth), to go over your treatment plan, and finally to have the appliances placed. Once treatment has begun, you will be seen in our clinic every 4-6 weeks for regular adjustment visits (approximately one hour) until treatment is completed. Once treatment is complete, you will be provided with a set of retainers.
