Frank A. Scannapieco is Professor and Chair of the Department of
Oral Biology, School of Dental Medicine, State University of New
York at Buffalo. He received the DMD from the University of
Connecticut, and the PhD in Oral Biology and Certificate in
Periodontology from the University at Buffalo.
Dr. Scannapieco is Associate Editor of the Journal of Periodontology, has edited two issues of Dental Clinics of North America, has served on the editorial board of the Journal of Dental Research, and as a referee for over 50 medical, dental and scientific journals. He is presently Treasurer of the American Associations for Dental Research, and an active member of several scientific and professional organizations such as the American Society for Microbiology, American Dental Association, and the American Academy of Periodontology. He practices periodontics, and is an active educator and mentor for graduate and dental students.
He studies oral microbiology, molecular mechanisms of bacterial colonization and the interface between oral and systemic health, especially the role of oral conditions in the process of respiratory infection.
Present research interests:
1. Interaction of salivary proteins with bacteria in oral biofilms.
2. Clinical trials to asses the role of poor oral hygiene in the colonization of the oropharynx by potential respiratory pathogens in mechanically-ventilated, intensive care unit patients.
