Professional Summary:

Personal Statement: I was trained as a cell and molecular biologist, and have been working in the salivary research field for more than 20 years. My research focused, until recently, on “Human salivary mucin MUC7, and MUC7 antimicrobial peptides”, and in particular on “Regulation of MUC7 mucin gene expression”, and “Mechanism of antimicrobial action of MUC7-derived peptides.” Currently, we continue to dissect various aspects of action of MUC7 12-mer peptide and several other antimicrobial peptides on the opportunistic fungal pathogen Candida albicans, using a newly developed genome-wide C. albicans mutant collection. A few years ago, I also became interested in salivary diagnostics and Sjogren’s Syndrome and have established collaboration with J.Ambrus, M.D., Associate Professor of Medicine, School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences at our university. His group has established a novel mouse model of Sjogren’s disease. We are collaborating on a project titled “Interleukin-14-alpha transgenic mice as a tool for identification of early mRNA and/or microRNA biomarkers for Sjogren’s Syndrome”. Over the course of my career, I have served as a research mentor to many post-doctoral fellows, graduate students (PhD, MS), dental, and undergraduate students.
