Described by JazzTimes as a "formidable bassist and composer," Petros Klampanis grew up in Greece, surrounded by the confluence of Mediterranean and Balkan folk music. He studied classical and jazz music in Athens, Amsterdam and New York. He now is active in the New York jazz scene, where he has performed alongside some of the city’s renowned jazz musicians.
Klampanis’s collaborations with saxophonist Greg Osby led to the release of his first two acclaimed albums, Contextual and Minor Dispute, on the saxophonist’s Inner Circle Music label. Fellow bassist Drew Gress has praised Klampanis’s “aggressive melodicism, beautiful intonation, and uniquely personal string writing.”
His album Minor Dispute was selected as one of the best Jazz records in 2015 by National Public Radio, while his recent album Chroma has received exceptional reviews in international media. On his third album as a leader and Motéma Music debut, Klampanis explores the colors of human character, inspired by world events and personal experience. Chroma, the Greek word for “color,” masterfully employs a full spectrum of sonic colors to paint an introspective and emotionally daring artistic statement.
