"If you want to get into a debate with a four-star Marine general, I think that is something highly inappropriate."

This is Trump spokeswoman Sarah Huckabee Sanders' response to reporters' questions about why Chief of Staff (and former general) John Kelly publicly lied yesterday about a US Representative's actions while defending his boss' attempt at a condolence call to the widow of one of the four US soldiers killed in Niger.

This is a remarkable combination of statements: first, regarding General as a sort of "title-for-life" (not only is it not, but there are specific laws forbidding active duty military from taking various senior government roles for seven years after retirement - laws which were specifically waived for Kelly to be allowed to take his present job as chief babysitter), but also stating outright that it is inappropriate for any member of the public to contradict a general, whether of the active-duty or the for-life variety.

In short, she just described the civilian control over the military as something contemptible and inappropriate.

Neither she, nor Kelly (a lifelong stain on his honor for what he did yesterday), nor Trump (may his name and his memory be erased) have any place in a democratic society. They have betrayed America.

Honest Trailers does "Star Trek: The Next Generation"

To be fair, TNG ran for 178 episodes over 7 seasons, so there was plenty of time for bad episodes, repeated tropes, and odd character business that looks a lot more odd when repeated back to back.

But, for all the solid, good entertainment that came from TNG, this is a fun take-down of all of the above. (As well as some honest criticism, e.g., Worf being the punching bag of the galaxy.)

The acceleration of the universe is an important variable for researchers studying things like dark matter and dark energy. Actually pinning it down is crucial in the search for those things that we can only measure indirectly. What’s more, it’s an important piece of validation for astronomers, says University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee physics professor and gravitational wave co-author Jolien Creighton.

“It’s completely consistent with the electromagnetic observation,” he says. “It verifies that there’s not something grossly wrong with our distance calibrations and electromagnetic astronomy.”

A Kim Kardashian and Kanye West's staffer was hit by a crook who ransacked 3 vehicles at the end of their driveway and made a getaway ... but not before surveillance cameras captured the alleged perp.

According to law enforcement sources ... the theft went down around 4 AM PT Friday at their Bel Air mansion. We're told the suspect never entered the home, but trashed the cars at the end of the driveway. After all that ... we're told all he got was one iPhone, which belongs to one of Kim & Kanye's staffers.

Our sources say security at the house spotted the guy and chased him off. We're told investigators were given this image -- from a surveillance system.

The guy didn't stop with the Wests. We're told he also hit their next door neighbor Kathy Griffin's staff. Again, he trashed a car at the end of the driveway and got a purse.

Guess he was disappointed ... since we're told the purse was ditched nearby.

Wild Elephants at Play
Kruger Park, South Africa

I was fortunate enough to take a safari in South Africa this summer. The entire experience blew me away from the moment we drove into the park, where we immediately found two tall giraffes munching on leaves. The rest of the 4 day experience was one of the best experiences of my life, all because the entire park was teeming with life everywhere we looked. I could describe for you nearly each encounter, as they still stand out in my mind with perfect clarity in a brain that is otherwise very forgetful (which is one of the reasons I take pictures in the first place). Today, however, I’m here to tell you a short story of the 5 wild elephants playing gleefully in the water.

On the third evening of our tour we drove up to the edge of a lake and the first thing we noticed were the waves lapping the shore on an otherwise calm day. Rounding the corner brought 5 young, male elephants into view actively roughhousing in the water. We sat in our jeep with dropped jaws watching them dance in a circle, push each other, splash water playfully, and hug each other. It was at this point I was suddenly hit with feelings of hope, for these magnificent beasts were in what was truly their space, safe from human predators and acting truly naturally wild and free. Hope comes from those times when you get a glimpse of light that a depressing negative trend might be reversing, and these elephants brought that to me in that moment. I thought of how large the park was, for we had only visited a small slice, and I realized the vastness of the space that had been set aside to protect the creatures of Africa and it hit me then that people cared for the longevity of our planet not just in the earth-protecting bubble where I live, but clear on the other side of the globe that is South Africa as well. The struggle to prevent extinction of the world’s species is far from over, but maybe, just maybe, we’re finally turning a mental and social corner. Hopefully.

In this post, I present to you one of the images I caught from watching these powerful beasts play in an amazing pool with seemingly boundless energy. I can only hope it conveys even a fraction of the emotions that brought tears to my eyes to watch these amazing animals at play.

The Cavaliers win against the Bucks on the road (116-97.)

The Bucks has the upper hand early in this first quarter, but then game stayed close throughout the first half. The Cavaliers were gaining momentum at the end of the second quarter with tough defense (Crowder in particular with a tough assignment, guarding a great player in Giannis.) The momentum gained later continued in the third quarter. Through two quarters the Cavaliers has only 10 assists. LeBron, the “main” ball handler was also patient in the first half. He wasn’t aggressive until later on as well.

Third quarter : “Korver Kounter” . Korver caught fire, making 3 three pointers in less than 2 minutes of playing time. Jeff Green made a floater at the buzzer to give the Cavaliers the largest lead of the night at this point (13 point lead.) At this time it was time to put the game away because the Bucks weren’t going away quietly.

Tristan Thompson showed his value in the 4th quarter with rebounding. It was a beautiful sequence in the 4th quarter. LeBron blocked Giannis, which led to LeBron 3-pointer; then Kevin Love blocked Monroe, which led to LeBron dishing it to the Henny God for 3. The block party is over here. 🙌 The Bucks are a fighting team but closing time came pretty quickly. The Cavaliers put the game out of reach. Unlike the season opener, the Cavaliers were draining some of their jump shots. The game slowed up a bit at the end due to foul calls, and timeouts but the Cavs secured it. ⚔️

LeBron: 24 points 10/16 FG, 2/4 3P, 5 reb, 8 assists, 1 steal, 1 block.
Kevin Love: 17 points 5/12 FG, 12 reb, 6 assists, 2 blocks.
Kyle Korver: 17 points 6/7 FG, 5/6 3P, 3 reb, 1 assist, 1 steal.
Jae Crowder: 14 points 6/8 FG, 2/2 3P, 4 reb, 1 steal.
Derrick Rose: 12 points 3/4 FG, 2 reb, 1 assist, 2 steals.
Jeff Green: 10 points 4/7 FG, 1 reb, 1 assist, 1 steal.
Tristan Thompson: 8 points 4/6 FG, 8 reb.
JR Smith: 7 points 3/11 FG, 1/6 3P, 3 reb, 2 assists.
Dwyane Wade: 4 points 2/7 FG, 2 reb, 3 assists, 1 steal.
Channing Frye: 3 points 1/1 FG, 1/1 3P, 1 reb, 1 assist.

While we tend to focus on treating the #physical symptoms of #chronic #pain at Avalon Laser Therapy, working with people in pain we see plenty of people struggling with mental health as a direct result.

Some have been suffering for years without a recourse before walking through our doors. This quickie article considers the relationship between chronic pain and mental health disorders, and the importance of becoming (or remaining) active even when it's the last thing your body wants to do.

A "synthetic form of cephalopod skin that can transform from a flat, 2D surface to a three-dimensional one with bumps and pits" has been created. "In a flash, an octopus can make like ragged-edged seaweed or coral by changing the color and texture of its skin, thus becoming nearly invisible in its environment."

The researchers "took inspiration from the 3D bumps, or papillae, that octopus and cuttlefish can inflate using muscle units in one-fifth of a second for camouflaging. The complement of papillae in a soft robot would be the air pockets, or 'balloons,' beneath the silicone skin." "By embedding small fiber-mesh spheres into the silicone, the scientists could control and shape the texture of the inflated surface."

See the remnants of Halley's Comet.

No, it hasn't fallen apart. However, dust and debris builds up along its path and when the Earth happens to pass through the path, as it does every year, we get the Orionid Meteor Shower.

And that shower happens to peak this weekend. The darker the sky the better the chance of seeing Orionid meteors. Between midnight and dawn is probably best.
