Clean Sweep

Through the Clean Sweep program, dental students help reduce crime and improve the quality of life in some of the most challenged neighborhoods throughout the City of Buffalo.

Cleaning Up Our Community

Throughout the year, students at the School of Dental Medicine go door-to-door throughout the City of Buffalo, talking with neighbors and learning how they can help. Typically, students will spend time cleaning up vacant lots, trimming trees, talking to residents about oral health and finding other ways to make the neighborhood a healthier place for everyone.

“It’s been a tremendous addition to improving quality of life, to addressing conditions of poverty in communities.”

- Buffalo Mayor Byron Brown

Providing Oral Health Education

During the Clean Sweep, dental students also talk with neighbors about their access to dental treatment and care. As part of Clean Sweep, we:

  • Give out toothbrushes and oral hygiene supplies
  • Identify people who may need a dentist
  • Tell people about the benefits of seeing a dentist
  • Let people know about dental services available throughout the community
