Dr. Genco is a SUNY Distinguished Professor and member of the National Academy of Medicine who served as chair of the oral biology department for 25 years.
Dr. Genco earned a PhD in microbiology and immunology from the University of Pennsylvania in 1967, and returned to UB to begin teaching periodontics and endodontics that year.
Dr. Genco is a member of the National Academy of Medicine, an organization that advises the global community and addresses critical issues in health, medicine and related policy.
Dr. Genco and his colleagues were among the first researchers to connect gum disease with heart disease and stroke. Dr. Genco has published more than 395 scientific papers making him arguably the nation's leading peridontal researcher. Now director of the UB Microbiome Center, Dr. Genco was vice provost of the university’s Office of Science, Technology Transfer and Economic Outreach (STOR), where he helped launch more than 80 companies in Western New York.
