BUFFALO, N.Y. – The University at Buffalo’s Educational Opportunity Center will bring families together for a day of learning and fun at its third annual Strengthening Families Celebration on Oct. 15.

The free event will take place from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at EOC, 555 Ellicott St. on UB’s Downtown Campus.

Under this year’s theme of “Celebrating Buffalo’s Culture & Diversity,” the event aims to help parents and children further strengthen their bond as they enjoy activities and exhibits together.

“This event was created to provide support for families — no matter how they are defined — by offering participation in a series of family-fun and family-friendly activities,” says Julius Gregg Adams, EOC executive director.

Members of the Colored Musician’s Club will make an appearance, sharing information about the club’s rich history and performing live music for kids and parents alike.

Children will take part in activities that demonstrate how science can be fun through interactive play-based learning, while parents have the opportunity to learn about the EOC’s high school equivalency, vocational and VITA Tax programs.

The event will feature carnival games, prizes, arts and crafts, scientific experiments and a small petting zoo. Kids also can have their pictures taken with Buffalo firefighters, who will arrive in one of the department’s fire engines.

Refreshments will be available for those who attend.

Those interested in attending can visit the EOC website and click on “Register for Event” in the orange tab on the left side of the page. For more information, contact EOC at 645-1951.

EOC provides programs to prepare low-income and non-traditional students for higher education and jobs. Founded in 1973, the EOC is part of a statewide network of 10 Educational Opportunity Centers and two Outreach and Counseling Centers that operate under SUNY’s University Center for Academic and Workforce Development.
