Welcome to Research at UB’s School of Dental Medicine!

The school’s long-standing research strengths have focused on periodontal disease, clinical dental studies, biological films, pain, and materials science. New and enhanced research areas include genomics, bone biology, forensics, implantology, community health, and applied clinical materials.

Faculty and student research takes place at all levels: from the basic research of molecular and cellular biology and genomics, to understanding community health factors of oral cancer. The scope of our applied and clinical research includes studies of responses to new tissue engineering scaffolds and artificial saliva, as well as evaluation of new dental care products such as mouth rinses and denture liners.

In the fiscal year ending June 30, 2010, our research funding from all sources (federal government, industry, and private foundations) totaled more than $6.5 million.

Our clinical research facilities have received significant investment in recent years. One example is our shift to digital X-rays. With the introduction of digital X-rays, work on our electronic oral health record (EOHR) system is accelerating. The EOHR is essential for future clinical and community health research programs, and is emerging as the centerpiece of a university-wide collaboration for developing more accurate descriptions in health records.

Our faculty includes several individuals honored internationally for their contributions to research and scientific leadership. These honors have been bestowed by the International College of Dentists, the International Union of Societies for Biomaterials Science and Engineering, the International Congress of Oral Implantology, and the International Association for Dental Research.

I look forward to sharing news about our research advances with you through this website! If you are a researcher at UB, our website also will provide you with tips and links for the information you need to locate funding opportunities, prepare a proposal, contact the research centers in the dental school, and network with our faculty and student researchers.

Best Regards---

EDUCATION >

The tradition of practicing dentists taking time to teach is as old as dentistry itself; the central role of practitioners as faculty is as old as the earliest organized dental schools.

EDUCATION >

As a proud member of the prestigious Association of American Universities (AAU), the University at Buffalo is committed to discovery, both basic and applied research, development and scholarship particularly related to oral health and disease.

EDUCATION >

Established in 1892, the School of Dental Medicine continues to educate general practitioners, specialists and biomedical scientists in the art and science of oral health through our comprehensive accredited programs.
