Labs and Facilities

Pantera Preclinical Laboratory

One of the busiest areas in Squire Hall is the Pantera Preclinical Laboratory, located on the basement level. First-year students spend one afternoon each week in this laboratory as part of the Freshman Preclinical Laboratory course; in addition, a large portion of the second-year program is conducted in this facility. There are work areas for nearly 100 students, and the second-year preclinical courses in operative dentistry, fixed prosthodontics, removable prosthodontics, and endodontics are conducted here. In addition to the main laboratory area, a plaster room, a casting room, and four X-ray machines provide additional support. There is also a seminar room for approximately thirty students.

Many short lectures and demonstrations are presented as part of the preclinical courses to assist students with understanding and completing assigned laboratory projects. Over the past few years, the audiovisual facilities have undergone extensive renovation to allow for effective multimedia presentations. A small-object television-projection system, computer-based lecture capability, videotape capabilities, and Internet access have made this a state-of-the-art teaching facility.

Prosthodontic Technical Laboratories

The School of Dental Medicine has two fully equipped, full-service prosthodontic laboratories located on the second floor of Squire Hall. Each laboratory employs full-time certified dental laboratory technicians to assist both predoctoral and graduate students with the completion of dental laboratory procedures associated with patient care. The experience students gain in interacting with the school’s technical laboratories prepares them to effectively communicate with commercial dental laboratories when they enter practice.

Fixed Prosthodontic Technical Laboratory

Under the supervision of the Department of Restorative Dentistry, dental laboratory technicians in the Fixed Prosthodontic Technical Laboratory fabricate crowns and bridges, apply porcelain, and serve as a technical resource for DDS and graduate students.

Removable Prosthodontic Technical Laboratory

Certified dental laboratory technicians perform all phases in the fabrication of removable partial dentures and complete dentures. Students learn to write laboratory prescriptions and interact with technicians to achieve optimal clinical results. Laboratory technicians work closely with third- and fourth-year students assigned to treat emergency patients in the repair of broken or damaged dentures.

As a proud member of the prestigious Association of American Universities (AAU), the University at Buffalo is committed to discovery, both basic and applied research, development and scholarship particularly related to oral health and disease.

The tradition of practicing dentists taking time to teach is as old as dentistry itself; the central role of practitioners as faculty is as old as the earliest organized dental schools.

Established in 1892, the School of Dental Medicine continues to educate general practitioners, specialists and biomedical scientists in the art and science of oral health through our comprehensive accredited programs.

The UB Smile Team promotes dental education and provides free oral health care in areas of the world that lack adequate access to treatment.

Since 1997 the School of Dental Medicine has operated a mobile dental unit (MDU) serving Chautauqua County in Western New York. The MDU averages approximately 3,100 patient visits per year.

Buffalo Outreach and Community Assistance (BOCA) is a SDM organization administered by dental students and dedicated to providing care to underserved areas. Students and faculty deliver much needed dental treatment to such locations as Appalachia, Belize, Dominican Republic, Ghana, Guatemala, Mexico and Vietnam and as well as in the Buffalo area.

Each year, volunteers guide hundreds of children through the award-winning Teddy Bear Clinic and to dental cleanings and treatment at the University at Buffalo School of Dental Medicine's annual "Give Kids a Smile Day."
